3 Simple Things

My mum follows a blog called "3 Beautiful Things".  The blog is run by a middle aged lady and every day she posts about 3 different things that have made her smile that day. Small or large, significant or insignificant, it doesn't matter as long as they have made her smile. Although horribly cheesy and kitsch, I think its a great idea for reflecting upon your day and no matter how bad you think it has been I'm sure anyone can come up with 3 things, so here are mine...
  1. The joy of having a shower - For over 12 months of not being able to have one (don't worry, I've been having baths!) due to either my arm having to be supported at all times or having my PICC line in (where all the medication and chemo has been pumped through) it feels so great to be able to quickly jump in the shower and out again in 5 minutes and actually feel clean when you're done!
  2. Going for breakfast in Clifton and meeting up with the lovely Jude - After not leaving the house for a few days, due to pain or simply not feeling brave enough, mum dragged me up to Clifton for breakfast. In the spirit of Carpe Diem I texted my friend Jude who lives in the village on the off chance that she was around and luckily she was! We spent a lovely few hours catching up over mugs of coffee and tea.
  3. Last night we watched a BBC documentary on Nigel Slater and his relationship with sweets! (If you're a documentary junkie like I am, I would highly recommend it). Naturally, watching this invoked cravings for sweets, so today my mum went to a proper sweet shop and bought me back a selection of the finest old fashioned sweets you can imagine, paper bag and all!
So there are my 3 things, what are yours? Its not something I'm going to post about everyday but just thought it would be nice to share the idea.

Tomorrow brings a day of hospital appointments; my first radiotherapy session and we found out this evening that I would be needing a blood transfusion tomorrow as my iron count is low.

  5. Hope all goes well tomorrow Ella and that you have a comfortable day. Love the three things idea - good to end the day thinking about the positive.

    I got my 3 smiles...

    - Finding a favorite sweater I thought I had lost forever tucked down behind my bottom drawer where it had fallen
    - finally getting my windscreen wiper replaced - such a little job but soooo satisfying to see where I am going !!
    - having 30 5/6 year olds sing along with Katy Perrys 'Fireworks' at the top of their voices today- I should add that they only actually know that one word from the song...the rest was just 'mumble mumble mumble' until we hit that chorus...and boy did they hit it!!

    Lots of love xxxx

  6. Hi Ella, thinking of you always and especially tomorrow....sending love, hugs and uber positive vibes through the ether to you.

My 3 most smiley occasions today (so far!) are......

    1) Kezia calling out "I love you mummy" across the classroom when I dropped her off at pre-school and subsequently the huge cheeky smiles I got when I peered in the door to pick her up later armed with her request for a sausage roll and prawn cocktail aka 'pink' crisps! As Andy says sometimes she is her fathers daughter!

    2) Tommy calling out across the swimming pool during his swimming lesson, (it was really quite loud due to the echoey nature of a swimming pool!).........to proudly tell me that he did the entire length of the pool without touching the bottom........a broad grin exchanged between us both and a big thumbs up from me....Kate his swimming instructor who is just lovely was grinning too!

    3) My dad turning up unprompted to dismantle, then purchase, come back and fit the new element into the main oven to get it working again....Yay....thanks dad......for him then to be drawn into a floor puzzle and game with Tommy and Kezia before then going on his way to work. So great to have our oven working and even more wonderful to have had this totally resolved without even having to ask. Thanks to pops the wonderful.

Andy has now told me off for writing too much....but I got into this idea of the 3 smiles of the day. You asking us all to involve ourselves in this has also made me recycle those earlier smiles and enjoy more, as it no doubt has for us all......so thanks and smiles to you too Ella.

    Lots of love.

  7. Great idea Ella , here are mine (mine will be shorter than Tina's !) :

    1) Waking up Tommy and Kezia prior to leaving for work @ 7 am this morning (they are usually awake before I go, but not today). Seeing the little bundles of love start to come around was lovely.

    2) Reading Tina's "brief" blog above which told me what the kids had been upto today ; maybe I should have asked her.

    3) Smiling to myself on the reaction I may get from my gorgeous wife when she reads this !!

thought with you as always for tomorrow.

    U Andrew xx

  8. Thank goodness I finally got round to giving blood! I live near Oxford so perhaps some of it will flow your way.

As per everyone else - your encouraging us to enjoy 3 things a day is a really good thing.

I've also been giving a lot of thought to the over-use of "brave" - I agree with you totally. Young people facing cancer and young soldiers being forced into the frontline - often terrified, not at all brave as it was not their choice to be there at all.

But we want to say how much we admire you for sharing your thoughts (and fears perhaps) as many others might just hide away feeling sorry for themselves. You aren't doing this so you are something....what adjective should we use?

  9. Hi Ella, we have never met but I know lots about you via your Uncle Bob.

My top 3 things that have made me smile today are:

    1. Thinking about how awesome the new James Bond movie was that I went to see at the cinema last night. I loved the drama that was Casino Royal, I was disappointed with Quantum of Solace, but Skyfall got me back on board the 007 bus.
    2. I made a new (for me) recipe from Jamie's 30m meals on Sunday night. (This impromptu inspiration is a very rare occurance for me although I do wish I was a regular domestic goddess.) It was fillet of lamb with mushroom and bacon sauce with celeriac mash. It was delish, as most/all Jamie meals are, and I had the left overs tonight. YUM!

    3. I finished the day with a drink with your Uncle, and my very dear friend, Bob. This was by far the highlight of my day:)

All the best for your hospital appointment tomorrow. I will be thinking of you. x

  10. In the spirit of Georgina:
    1) Breakfast with some classic challenge TV (yoghurt)
    2) Lunch with a good friend (pasta)
    3) Dinner with good friends (pizza)
